French burka rebel to stand for president

Two Muslims have become the first women in France to be fined for wearing a burka.

Hind Ahmas, 32, and Najate Nait Ali, 36, were sentenced yesterday under a law that bans anyone from hiding their face in public.

But they were not in court because they had both refused to take off their burkas in the dock.

Ahmas was fined £105 and Ali was told to pay £70 for wearing the full Islamic face veils during a protest march against the law in May.
