Bulgarian education minister backs burqa ban idea

Bulgaria’s Education Minister Meglena Kouneva has expressed support for Prosecutor-General Sotir Tsatsarov’s idea of banning the wearing of the burqa at schools.

Tsatsarov told reporters on April 1 that legislators should ban burqas from public places, in particular educational establishments.

He called for a very careful discussion of the issue, adding that there should be no restrictions on religious freedom, while saying that religious motifs should not be used for unlawful propaganda, political ends or radicalisation.

“My opinion is that such restrictions should exist in relation to educational institutions, public places, just as such prohibitions exist in some Western European countries, in particular at educational institutions,” Tsatsarov said. [The Sofia Globe] Read more
