Birmingham Islamic school forced to pull job advert for 'male only' teacher after equalities row

AN Islamic mixed school has been forced to pull an advert for a male science teacher after claims it could potentially breach equalities legislation by ruling out women.

Salafi Independent School, based in Coventry Road, Small Heath, caters for more than 150 Muslim pupils aged from five to 11.

It recently posted the job advert on Twitter, stating: “The Salafi Independent School is now recruiting a part-time male science & Islamic Studies teacher.”

Interested male applicants were asked to contact the school’s headteacher, Dr Perwaiz Saeed Alam.

But secular campaigners called for an investigation by the Department for Education (DfE) after claiming the advert could breach equality laws by ruling out female applicants.

After being contacted by the Birmingham Mail the school pulled the Twitter ad, but said it plans to readvertise the role and still ‘hoped’ to recruit a male teacher. [Birmingham Mail] Read more
